S100 calcium binding protein B or S100 Beta is a member of the S100 family. S100 proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and nucleus of a wide range of cells, and involved in the regulation of a number of cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentation. S100 Beta is abundant in glial cells of the central and peripheral nervous system, in melanocytes, chondrocytes, and adipocytes. Anti-S100 Beta labels langerhans cells, histiocytes, epithelial, myoepithelial cells and integrating reticular cells of lymphoid tissue, and tumors originated from these cells. It is a useful marker for diagnosis of melanoma and tumors of the nervous system.
